See where we collect wine data

  • We visit 150 to 350 points-of-sales by city in America, Europe and Asia once in a year

  • We visit points-of-sales such as wine shops, restaurants, hypermarkets, supermarkets or department stores. Our field team records wine offer in store (camera) and wine list in restaurants (pictures). The full wine offer is recorded by our cameras. We use image recognition technology on wines that our field team find in stores.

All Wines are collected

  • All the grape-based wines are collected, from all the origins, all categories, all sizes

  • When store-checking we record each front label information of each wine. We also collect materials (bottles...) as well as sizes. As this is a wine audit, we all save regular and promotional prices. So, we collect all categories, all origins, all brands, all varietals, all vintages, all colors, all sizes, all materials.

  • The samples are based on the landscape of outlets selling wine. Since 2009, we have been collecting and regularly updating our database of outlets with thousands of records. Each outlet is codified upon several criteria such as distribution channel, belongs to a group/independent, gourmet/traditional, location, opening date, cuisine and average price per meal, etc. The sampling is done based on those criteria to be as much representative as it can be. Non-standard outlets are excluded to not bias analysis.

  • On-trade: The more mature a market is, the higher the number of high-street restaurants will be in the sample. Hotels: 1 to 2 restaurants selected per major 4 or 5 star-hotel - High-street restaurants based on: Location, Cuisine, Average price per meal - Wine Bars: only few. Online merchants: mix of traffic indicators and size of the wine offer. Speciality channel: - Chain stores: 1 to 3 per major chain (upon the market maturity and therefore the number of chains) - Independent stores: priority to those established for some time and/or the most reviewed by shoppers on the internet (to avoid the turnover of outlets, quite frequent in Chinese cities). Grocery channel: - Chain stores: all the main supermarkets and hypermarkets brands are surveyed. The number of selected stores depends on the number of stores of each retailer per city + the different formats of stores they may have. - Independent stores / CVS: few, depending on the market maturity (not the focus).
